Faithful Stewardship Counts the Costs

Ted stared at the renewal packet spread across the conference table, doing the math again even though he already knew the answer. The church’s insurance premium hadn’t just gone up, it had nearly tripled. Everyone in the room understood that Dallas weather brings risk, but this felt different. The increase was too steep, too sudden, and landed on top of a budget that was already stretched thin by rising costs everywhere else. As the finance chair, Ted wasn’t just reviewing numbers. He was weighing decisions that would affect the church’s future.

For the first time ever, a dangerous thought crept in. What if they scaled coverage back? What if they skipped insurance altogether for a season and trusted nothing would happen? Even though it was tempting to act on these thoughts, Ted knew better. He understood what was really at stake. One storm. One accident. One lawsuit. The church could lose everything if they had to pay out of pocket for just one of those disasters.

So, Ted shifted his mindset. The question wasn’t whether or not insurance was expensive. The question was whether or not the church could survive the consequences of being unprotected. That tension between rising costs and responsible stewardship is exactly where many Texas churches find themselves, and it’s the thread that runs through this week’s conversations on the podcast.
