Every year when Grace Fellowship’s property insurance came up for renewal, the process felt routine. The church administrator would make a few calls, gather some quotes, line them up side by side, and choose the lowest number. It seemed efficient and responsible. After all, insurance felt interchangeable. Once the decision was made, attention shifted back where it belonged—to youth programs, counseling ministries, and serving the community.

    Then came the storm.

A spring hailstorm tore through North Texas with a kind of force every Texan recognizes. Windows shattered. Sections of the roof were destroyed. Rain poured through skylights and ceilings, soaking furniture, floors, and equipment. In a matter of minutes, years of careful stewardship were put to the test.

Grace Fellowship expected their insurance to carry them through the recovery. Instead, reality hit hard. The hail deductible was far higher than anyone remembered. The roof settlement was reduced because of depreciation. Repairs dragged on. Worship services moved offsite. Giving dipped. And the budget stretched in ways no spreadsheet had predicted.

That moment forced an uncomfortable realization. What had felt like savings year after year came at a cost they couldn’t see until it mattered most.

The church insurance market in Texas has changed dramatically over the last few years. In this week’s episodes of the podcast, we are focusing on how church leaders can navigate these changes. Our focus this week is how to shop for a church insurance policy in Texas in light of these changes.
