Mary never expected church insurance to become a crisis. As the church secretary, her role was supposed to be administrative, supportive, and steady. But one morning, she opened an email that changed everything. Her church’s policy had been non-renewed, and months later, they were still uninsured.
What followed was a maze she didn’t know existed.
She started where most churches start and called an independent agent she trusted. What she didn’t know was that the agent didn’t specialize in commercial insurance, much less church insurance in Texas. Promises were made. Time passed. No proposal ever came. The clock kept ticking.
Desperate to protect the building, Mary turned to a large national firm. They eventually produced a quote, but it felt cold and rigid. No questions about the church. No discussion of ministries. No attempt to understand risk. Just a number and a deadline. The price was staggering, and the service left her uneasy. She walked away, hoping there had to be a better option.
Then came the hard truth. Another major company told her they simply weren’t insuring churches like hers anymore. She called again. Same answer. She called a third time, convinced someone had to be willing to help. No luck. By then, the market was saturated. Other agencies stopped returning calls altogether.
Months passed. The church remained uninsured. Eventually, the bank stepped in and force-placed insurance on the property. Suddenly, that earlier quote didn’t seem so unreasonable.
Mary never imagined her faithfulness would be tested in this way. She had no idea that the church insurance market had changed so significantly. And she is not the only one who was shocked. We have heard from more and more churches who are experiencing non-renewals, higher premiums and coverage that’s split between companies.
